FreeSteps – NiNi is SU Wei-chia’s solo work for unconventional space at the sixth year of his 10-years FreerSteps choreography development. In this project, the performance takes place out of the theater and comes to people in their daily life. The audience encounters the dancer under a streetlamp in the city, where all of the elements around including the temperature, lighting and landscape at that time, as well as spectators become materials for the creation.
In FreeSteps – NiNi, the dancer sets dance free from fixed imagination, expectations and assumptions. It is simply a struggle between dancing steps and physical body. The body is frequently angular while the dancer remains in rotative as oasis of calm, oblivious to the busy city surroundings. The physicality of variation and rotation flowing through lights and shadows contribute to shape the vividly live body sculpture.
Stepping out of the confines of a conventional theater, Free Steps – NiNi brings itself into direct contact with a varied audience (or should I say passers-by) to project imagination. On this level of thought, this dance work rhetorically answers a question about the publicness of theater, “Should theater possess publicness?”
